Built a portal that lets researchers securely access open and controlled microbiome datasets at scale for downstream analysis.

The problem
Researchers needed secure, scalable access to both open and controlled-access microbiome datasets, but existing sharing methods did not enforce access controls or support the volume required for downstream analysis and collaboration.
The solution
I designed and built a research and data deposition portal using Python, GraphQL, and React on Google Cloud, plus a ~50TB public-access resource, enabling secure dataset access at scale for collaborative science.
Technical approach
- Modeled open vs. controlled-access data flows with appropriate authorization
- Built a GraphQL API over the dataset catalog for flexible queries
- Delivered a React interface for browsing, requesting, and retrieving data
- Deployed on Google Cloud for scalable, durable storage and serving
Business impact
- Researchers securely accessed open and controlled datasets in one place
- Access controls were enforced consistently rather than ad hoc
- A ~50TB public resource became an integrated, analyzable asset
- Cross-institution collaboration on shared data became practical
