A secure data deposition portal for large-scale microbiome datasets

Built a portal that lets researchers securely access open and controlled microbiome datasets at scale for downstream analysis.

Deployment

The problem

Researchers needed secure, scalable access to both open and controlled-access microbiome datasets, but existing sharing methods did not enforce access controls or support the volume required for downstream analysis and collaboration.

The solution

I designed and built a research and data deposition portal using Python, GraphQL, and React on Google Cloud, plus a ~50TB public-access resource, enabling secure dataset access at scale for collaborative science.

Technical approach

  • Modeled open vs. controlled-access data flows with appropriate authorization
  • Built a GraphQL API over the dataset catalog for flexible queries
  • Delivered a React interface for browsing, requesting, and retrieving data
  • Deployed on Google Cloud for scalable, durable storage and serving

Business impact

  • Researchers securely accessed open and controlled datasets in one place
  • Access controls were enforced consistently rather than ad hoc
  • A ~50TB public resource became an integrated, analyzable asset
  • Cross-institution collaboration on shared data became practical
